I breathed in the fresh air and sighed. The music had faded, and I was alone. A snap of branches caught my ear. I turned to see Sacha behind me. My heart sank. He was the last person I needed to see right then. Steeling myself, I turned back to the forest and hugged myself.

“Are you alright, Princess? Princess Cindra sent me to follow you. It’s not safe to wander the woods alone.”

I frowned. “You mean because I’m a halfling?” The words came out harsher than I meant them to.

His eyebrows shot up. “Because the White Court could be hunting you.”

“Yeah. I’ll be fine. You can go back to your… whatever you were doing.”

He blinked. “Dancing?”

I flushed. “Sure. Whatever.”

Seeing his confusion only made me flush more. Why couldn’t he leave me alone?

“I just need to be alone.”

“But it’s dangerous…”

A loud sigh escaped me, and I threw up my arms. “When is it not dangerous for me, Sacha? Everyone wants me dead.”

My voice echoed around the trees, ripping through the leaves. A rush of heat burned through me. My heart raced, and red spots clouded my vision. Woah. I took a deep breath and imagined a cool stream. Peaceful. Quiet. What was going on with my emotions?

“Princess?” Sacha moved closer.

I sighed. “It’s nothing. I’m just… nothing.”

“Okay.”

“You were flirting with those elves.” I cringed as the words flew out of my mouth.

He blinked at me.

“I mean, I don’t care. It’s whatever, but I thought you had a girlfriend. Elf friend…”

His head cocked. “I have a lot of elf friends.”

“No. I mean like… you know a girl elf that you liked. More than friends.”

His eyes widened. “Like a lover?”

My face flamed. “I guess?”

He shook his head. “Why would you think that?”

I averted my eyes. “That elf girl I saw in your memory.”

He stiffened. “Aurelie?”

Feeling like an idiot, I didn’t meet his eyes. Instead, I fidgeted with my bracelet.

“Ren, you saw my sister.”

Heat rushed over me. Sister? I winced. “Oh. I… I didn’t know. But why I haven’t met her?”

His face fell. “She’s dead.”

Oh.

I clenched my eyes shut and blew out a breath. “I’m sorry, Sacha. I’m so sorry.”

All this time I thought he’d been hiding a dark secret. I wanted to take back all the words. What the hell was wrong with me?

I sat down against a wide trunk and pulled my knees up to my chest. He sat next to me, his warmth making my heart skip. His muscular shoulder brushed against me.

“I don’t like to remember because it still hurts.”

I met his soulful eyes, wishing I could soothe his pain. But a temporary fix wouldn’t solve this and even the thought of using my magic for this felt wrong. This was a pain for his sister. It should be respected, felt. I had no right to take that away from him.

“I’m sorry.” My words fell flat.

He gave me a sad smile. “You didn’t know.”

“No, but I shouldn’t have pried.”

“She would have liked you.”

I gaped at him, unsure of how to respond. “Why?”

His eyes bore into me, their intensity making me shudder.
